The Television of My Childhood
There are times when I mix up my early childhood and late childhood in my mind, so it’s a bit hard for me to remember this exactly. What I do remember though are my birthday parties and birthday cakes, so I’ll try to base it on that.
As most of you know (and as the rest of you should know), I have a twin brother. Growing up, we did everything together, including watching T.V., so we basically liked the same shows, and it can be seen in our birthday parties.
The first birthday cakes I can remember are our Dexter and Dee Dee cakes. Obviously, his was Dexter, and mine was Dee Dee. Apparently, we used to love that show, probably cause we could relate to it. I’m not sure about then, but nowadays my brother loves making things. He’s like an Industrial Designer in the making. Plus, then, he really loved insects (a very rare thing for little boys to be into), so by extension, he was really interested in scientific things. I, on the other hand…I was probably just an annoying person. I definitely remember that about myself as a kid (and now, sometimes).
Another set of birthday cakes I remember were our Wartortle and Charmeleon birthday cakes. Tell me you don’t know who they are, and you’ll break my heart. My brother and I used to love Pokemon, and we still love Pokemon, going from the T.V. show to the card game to the video game, which I think is kind of backwards for most other people. I still play the game every now and then, and I still have most of my cards.
Wartortle and Charmeleon, for your information, are the evolved forms of Squirtle and Charmander, respectively. We even got Squirtle and Charmander stuffed toys (which we still have) and Wartortle and Charmeleon remote-controlled toys (which are kind of broken, with mine breaking first) sometime down the line. I always got Squirtle and Wartortle, and my brother always got Charmander and Charmeleon.
Of course, me being a girl and my brother being a boy, we had to have different show preferences at some point. Like almost every girl my age, I also had a Lizzie Mcguire phase. I even had a few Lizzie Mcguire books and a Hilary Duff CD. I remember myself being so proud to have the same birthday as Hilary Duff (which I really do, by the way).
I also loved watching a bunch of other shows (mostly those shows you see on Tumblr with captions about being a 90′s kid), including Legends of the Hidden Temple, Captain Planet (every morning before school), The Amanda Show, Clarissa Explains It All (I remember being so amused that her name sounded like mine, and that her guy friend’s name was Sam when I thought Sam was a girl’s name), etc.
I loved those shows. It’s too bad they have to keep making new versions of shows that were completely awesome already. The new versions all suck. None of the new Pokemon series can compare to the original. The Asian Art Attack we have on nowadays is terribly boring, honestly. And whatever happened to Lilo from Lilo and Stitch?
When we start to look back at our childhood loves it shows our age. xP
But there’s nothing wrong with loving that stuff, even now. I’ve always been a firm believer of “if you love something don’t give it up”. There’s no need to give up liking things like that just because we’re older. It may seem childish to others, but who cares? I have a friend who’s boyfriend scoffed and made fun of a guy he knows because he still likes Pokemon yet he collects toys and plays tons of video games himself. Such a hypocrite. -_-

I wish I could remember the kinds of birthday cakes I had… I was really into Pochacco when I was very little. It would’ve been awesome to have had a cake like that!
Yes, 90′s shows were definitely some of the most beloved. I feel like most of the teen shows nowadays pale in comparison. Nickelodeon is currently re-airing some of their 90′s shows late at night. They’re calling it “The 90′s Are All That”. I’ve caught it once or twice. Nostalgia! :D

I miss the old shows from my childhood. They definitely had more substance than the new shows that air today. I used to watch Pokemon every night. There was also Hey Arnold, Doug, Catscratch, the old Spongebob, Lizzie McGuire, All That, X-Men, etc. I also watched reruns of some ’80s shows as a little kid.
I still have the soundtrack to Lizzie McGuire and a Hilary Duff CD, too. XD

I loved the original Art Attack with that English guy. Now I see these ridiculous spin-offs of Art Attack, and one of them in Australia has this creepy guy in a spotty shirt and overalls and he just looks like a paedophile to be quite honest. :( There were so many good shows when I was younger, and I’m a 90s kid too… and the shows that are on these days are really dull and lack that excitement and uniqueness that 90s shows had.
I know Pokemon! :D I didn’t really have a favourite, but I was obsessed with drawing Bellsprout and Vileplume, so they ended up being my favourites, as tarty as those Pokemon sound. :P
I don’t think I ever had a birthday cake that fun… mine were all just chocolate cakes, and what made them cool were the decorations like the candles and stuff. :P

I loved Clarrisa Explains It All. Sometimes I still rewatch it on YouTube or The N.
