The Sniffles

Earlier this week, I was sick – of what exactly, I don’t know, though I’m pretty sure it was just some exaggerated reaction to the crazy weather we’ve been having lately. Whatever it was, I hated it; I hated the inconvenience, the discomfort, the hassle. There are actually a lot of things I hate about being sick, but here are the first few that come to mind.

Top 5 Things I Hate About Being Sick

1. Absences
Some people would actually think of it as a priviledge to not need to go to school for a couple of days but, honestly, once you’re done with grade school that’s no longer the case. I don’t like having to deal with the hassle of taking make-up tests, asking others for assignments, trying to answer assignments while your nose is practically overflowing (too much information), trying to read about the lessons you missed (or be absolutely clueless in school the next day)…I’d rather go to school.

2. Bipolar Body Temperatures
I had a really bad fever for a while there, and, because of that, I was freezing cold. There were also times when that fever would go away for a while and, because of the warm weather, I’d start to sweat. Shiver, sweat, shiver, sweat, shiver, sweat…how can that not be fun?

3. Taking a Bath
Who knew some self-hygiene could become such a nightmare? I was already freezing; do you think splashing water on myself would make things any better? It took me just as long to take a bath as I did to put on my clothes, as I was afraid to let go of my towel, a.k.a, my primary protection from the cold. Once fully clothed, I still struggled to walk in a straight line, due to all the shivering.

4. Eating
I’m not a particularly gluttonous person, but, still, who doesn’t love eating? Sickness, however, takes away all the enjoyment from eating. When you’re sick, you’re never really in the mood to eat. When you’re sick, your nose is too stuffed for you to taste anything properly. When you’re sick, half of the food you can actually taste tastes gross. I don’t think I finished a single meal while I was sick.

5. Isolation
I’m pretty sure I wasn’t contagious the whole time, but, to be safe, we just made sure nobody went to near me. I had my own towel for when I washed my hands, nobody could sit anywhere I sat and somebody always had to get my food for me, in fear that I would contaminate the rest of the food. My little brother said, “Hi,” to me from afar, and my boyfriend stayed at least a good foot away from me when he visited. I felt a bit lonely, but it’s not like I was sick too long.

It wasn’t a serious illness or anything, so I was basically just really annoyed. Well, I hope that doesn’t happen again any time soon. It’s unlikely that I’d get sick like this more than once in one school year anyway.

Yeah, being sick has definitely lost it’s fun. I loved being absent up until my junior year. The make-up work wasn’t great, but I was usually able to assume what a lot of the work was going to be and stay on track. We didn’t have as many tests back then. Those are the killer for me. Missing a test means having to sit in the hallway like a dope and missing yet another day of work. Not fun.

The eating bothers me, too. Well, drinking, really. I could go without much food, but I’m always sipping on something. If there’s anything wrong with my throat, it’s just unbearable.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. At least you got it now and not at the end of the year when things get crazy.

Aww. :( You know, I feel like that every time I get sick too. However, this year all the flu’s turned into intestines flu’s, so that’s even worse (you’d need a constant diaper to be able to go out O_O). Hope you’re fine now. *hugs* Being sick sucks (alliteration meant!)!

Basically, we have the same complaints. Well yeah, both are of advantage and disadvantage though. I used to enjoy being absent in class, ‘cos sometimes I need all these break from all toxic activities (aka school work). Now that I’m starting my days as a college student, I doubt I’ll be able to do that. =(

The discomfort of being sick (in any means) makes me say wtf.

I hate the absences that come with school!! It’s so annoying! Especially because some teachers are unnecessary and go out of their way to make things more difficult for students that have missed their class, whether it’s excused or not.

You’re right, eating when you’re sick is so irritating. It all has a weird taste. Bleh.

I HATE GETTING SICK DURING COLLEGE!! >.< It's so difficult to make up everything… Far, far away from staying home and just making cookies with your mom.

I’m sorry about your chills and flashes. :( It seems like it really sucks… :L Oh, wait. I know it sucks, too. :/

When I’m sick I take hot showers because the steam helps with my nose! ^^ I don’t know if that would help you or not. o.o

Do you find yourself craving odd foods, too? Or what about crazy combinations? That’s what I do… Whilst we’re on the subject, I just figured I’d ask you. :P

I hope you don’t feel as bad as you did and that you feel better now. Which, from what I read, I think you are? *hugs*

I did take a bath, but I think I did at the wrong time cause I’m pretty sure it made it worse.
Yeah, I’m better now. :) I was only absent for a couple of days. :)

I hate getting sick! Last year I came down with some horrible flu. I swear, I thought I was going to die. I couldn’t move without my head pounding (it felt like jackhammers having a go at my head), my entire body was sore to the touch, and I was constantly switching between hot and cold, as my fever broke and ignited again. To top it off, I just had a gross “sick” feeling, which made everything sound unappetizing and the thought of doing anything disgusting. Of course I had to miss school, and that was the worst. I missed a big test, and it wasn’t until several weeks later that I got to make it up. :P But I pretty much agree with everything you wrote.

Well if you get the chance, I encourage you to join the contest. :) We REALLY need people to join. So far there are only 12 contestants and we need over 32 for it to run smoothly. The deadline for auditions is the 24th, so I’m a bit worried that we won’t get enough. :/

But yes, if it is successful, the prizes next year could be even better. Especially since I’ll be over 18, able to use a credit card, and therefore able to contribute to the “money-costing” prizes.

Being sick is shitty. I am sick more then I am well, but it’s part and parcel of my life that it doesn’t bother me too much. I just deal with it, but when I was studying, sometimes I had to do work from my bed … That was always fun, NOT! I’m glad you’re feeling better then you have been. And the yoghurt? I’m still ok, if it had of effected me, I would be sick by now so no drama :) I should really remember to look at expiry dates when buying things …

Aww, your reasons are exactly the same ones that I hate. Most people are happy to stay home from school but me? Nooo, I don’t think it’s worth it. You miss out on so much and even when you’re home resting it feels more like misery than a vacation, lol. Doesn’t it suck when you want to eat something yummy but all you can have is either soup, or you CAN eat something yummy but you can’t even taste it? Tortureeee haha. It seems like you’re better now though, I’m glad :)

I hate being sick. It makes me feel so disabled or something -_- Ugh. And I know what you mean about the hassle of being absent! It’s hard to catch up with the stuff you miss out on, right? Some people wish to be sick but not definitely not me :\ It sucks to be sick especially when you want to eat something you really crave for yet your body doesn’t permit you to do so. Ugh.

OMG you’re SO right. Personally I HATED missing school… Yeah maybe when I was in grade school and even highschool, but college… Wow it was just a recipe for disaster. Missing school never got you any further ahead, and it wasn’t a privilege to not have to be there, either. I was really sick actually in my final year of highschool, I contracted mono (really no idea how I did it). I never get sick… So when I do- It hits, HARD. I was bedridden for 5 hole weeks, with nothing but email to get my homework/assignments from the teacher. My mom would make a trip to my school twice a week to drop off the finished assignments. And it was in my final semester of my final year! I could have lost everything… Thankfully I worked so hard and managed to still pass with great marks… But yeah- TOTALLY hear you, lol.

Ugh, I agree with you on every single thing you’ve said. I hate being sick. My parents have asked me if I wanted to stay home from school many time whenever I was sick or had a fever, but I didn’t want to miss school because then I’d have to make-up a test or learn a lesson by myself. I actually have never missed a day of school since grade school.
I also love to eat, but whenever I’m sick I get frustrated because everything tastes the same, even if the food I’m eating is delicious.

Comment by Nugget • July 13, 2011 • 4:29 am

eh! being sick is the worse. Remember when you were younger you use to hope and pray you got sick to stay home and watch cartoons all day? Now you’re older and being sick just gets in the way and sets you so far behind.

I hate being ill and I think I have to agree with you about absences. I never liked being absent from school because you would miss out on stuff, and I guess I liked having good attendance as it was. I got a cold in the summer once, and worked in an airconditioned office. I hated it so much argh! But I had to come in and suffer. Dx

I hate taking a shower in the cold without feeling ill. I always hate the moment when I turn off the water and throw my towel on and I’m freezing like shit. It’s definitely worse when you’re ill though, and you don’t even want to move all that much. I got pneumonia once and my body temperature was going absolutely insane. D:

*hugs* I hope you do get better soon though!
