Superpowers?

A while back, I’d been browsing SkeletonsMB when I saw this one discussion about superpowers. “What superpower do you want?”- it doesn’t seem like too hard of a question to answer, but I couldn’t seem to pick anything. In my head, they all had consequences.

Mind Reading

For the longest time, I thought this was the superpower I wanted, but, honestly, I don’t think I’d be able to take it, self-esteem-wise. I’d constantly be hearing things that are better off unheard. I don’t think I’m strong enough to deal with that; I’m pretty sure my pride would be crushed.

Invisibility

I could be caught in some pretty terrifying scenarios with this one. Not being seen would probably lead to a lot of accidents. Someone could accidentally hit you, someone could accidentally hurt you, and we definitely can’t rule out the possibility of someone accidentally killing you. And, when you die, nobody’s going to be able to see your body.

Time Traveling

Besides the obvious – changing the present, messing up the space-time continuum (whatever that means) – I could imagine myself getting really old really fast, at least compared to others, that is, assuming your body remains aging in spite of what time you’re in. I don’t see why anyone would want that.

Super Strength

Do any of you seriously believe I’d be able to have a power like this without accidentally killing a person ever now and then? My clumsiness is already getting me into enough trouble as it is!

Teleportation

You can never completely know what could be in the area you teleport to. I could imagine finding myself in some pretty awkward or dangerous situations. I could die. It’s a definite possibility. Who’s to say that I would never be caught in the middle of gunfire or something?

Immortality

You’re eventually going to have to run out of things to do. It would be pretty boring, not to mention depressing; imagine yourself living forever while you watch everyone you know just dying one after the other. It would be a sad life.

The way I see it, superpowers can only lead to the death of me – not necessarily physically, but possibly emotionally. Not that I’d ever have to deal with that sort of thing.

I guess there are consequences to super powers. Maybe there is a study on our fascination of super powers that describes why that is so. It sounds so good at first.
Maybe it’s because our idea of super powers is too much of a good thing. I think we all have super human capabilities but we don’t all have the same ones. Like when a mom lifts a car off her baby or people who are really good leaders, people that are good at math. And people that are good at writing. ;) We all have super powers but not the same ones. And may that’s because we humans are supposed to work as a team and equals.

If you would like some more reading on anti-evolution most of my 12 month challenge up to now is on those kind of books. http://openwings.info/12-week-challenge/
I really don’t have anything against evolutionists except for what you said, they keep teaching things like they are established fact, even to the point of censoring and having people lose their jobs if they speak against evolution, like we are in the dark ages. All this when evolution is being proven to be less than a theory. Sometimes I get so worked up about evolutionists that I have to take a step back and remember. There is more to a person then what they believe about the origin of life.

I’ve thought of it as well. A superpower I’d like is something that’ll allow me to use or “un-use” any superpowers I’d like. However, I doubt it’s going to lead me any where. Mind reading is just knowing what people would be saying and what they think of you. And the other super powers? As you said, they all had bad sides.

I guess I’ll rather stay a normal human, but having a superpower for a day would be rather fun, I’m fairly sure. ;)

Yes, but I’ve decided to look forward to the trip in December when it will be cooler and I’ll actually get to wear coats. It’s been ages since I wore one.

I don’t want a superpower. I am happy not knowing, BUT if I were to have one it would be telepathy. BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!!

That’s mainly the reason why I find that superpowers fit the hero genre well and ONLY the hero genre, because in real life having such powers would be incredibly inconvenient. They’d be fun to have once in a while, but like you mentioned, they can also backfire, and then they won’t seem so fun. Not only that, but when someone gets a new power they always feel they have to contribute to society by catching bad guys to equal the fact that they’re friggin’ awesome now.

Hm, I can’t seem to choose one (that I won’t screw up my life with). I think that’s a reason why superpowers are for superheros (not super-average people).

If I had the ability to read minds, I might come across some secret from the FBI and accidentally tell someone. Or, I’d get a migraine from the random thoughts emitting from people’s heads.

Wait. If being able to fly was a superpower on the list, I’d totally choose that. I mean honestly. If I fell off a rather large building, I could just fly. :D

Having super powers can be <3 and at the same time not.. especially immortality.. You will see people come and go and it hurts when that thing happens.. lol I think I would choose mind reading and transportation.. haha invisibility is also cool because you get to stalk someone without being caught.. lol

Good points. Nice reflection. I kind of wanted to have mindreading way back then. although i know i have that esp with me and sometimes i can get what other people are trying to say just by their looks… i always thought mindreading would be the superpower i’d like to have. :D

I agree with you with your last statement. Superpowers may seem pretty cool since you’re basically “a cut above the rest” or like extra special than the normal mortals out there. But for some reason you really won’t be able to appreciate life as it is, you know? It would be awesome to have superpowers to fly, though! Heehee. I wouldn’t want to have a “Mind Reading” superpower for the reason that I wouldn’t know how to react to the thoughts of other people especially negative ones :\

My friend lives by the quote ‘what you don’t know can’t hurt you’. That is so true; I wish I could selectively read some people’s minds or turn off the power at times; like when I want to. I don’t think it would benefit me much, except for knowing the truth about certain things or the way people really feel. It would not be wise to muck around with it though.

There’s that show called ‘No Ordinary Family’ about a family with superpowers. It got cancelled… how far could it have gone? XD Anyway, that was an interesting look at how some powers are not always good.

I wish I was really smart, but then I would never have that ability to feel proud of myself because I know I can excel in anything. It would make the idea of success really boring.

Teleportation and moving in time… fuck. As much as I’d like those, and how much I want a TARDIS like in Doctor Who, I don’t want to step on something and fuck up history, nor do I want to teleport in case I land on Mars. Or something. I think the wonderful thing about life is that we don’t have these kinds of powers and that makes the little things great. :)

I probably would like the invicibility. Just for the fun of it. It would also be a nice “safe” feature if you’re walking on bad neighbourhoods :P I wouldn’t like to read peoples minds because it just would be TOO MUCH INFORMATION for me :P
